Another surprise to many is that Ecuador is home to a significant industrial production of soluble and instant coffee, all manufactured under the near monopoly held by Café Elcafe, which in recent years have exported between 1.1 million and 1.2 million 60-kilogram bags worth of green coffee equivalent to countries in Europe and key emerging market Russia. This coffee is almost exclusively produced with robusta coffee imported from Brazil and Vietnam, which after processing is re-exported as finished products. But the soluble sector is getting increasing competition from new boutique roasters and traditional brands like Cafe Gardella.

  • It is also interesting to note that Ecuador is the most important importer of Ugandan coffees (Robusta ) in Latin America and become one important buyer of Ugandan coffees. This is because Robusta produce 3 times more yield than Arabica for the production of soluble coffees. This also may explain why quality in Ecuador was not a paradigm, despite is a beautiful country blessed for the production of excellent and different fine coffees as Colombia.
