The outbreak of rust in Nariño and Huila would continue to impact the coffee production in Colombia negatively in the next few years and production failed to recover to levels above 8.5 million bags. Another significant factor to the dramatic impact on production in Colombia was climate change which according to scientists, starting in 2007, changed to a global cycle dominated by cooler weather and more rain under the influence of the La Niña phenomenon. This led to a reduction in sun exposure by over 30 percent, or to less than 3 to 3.5 hours of sun exposure per day, which resulted in significantly lower yields.
