Up to as many as 1 million people were killed during the Rwanda genocide in 1994 and humanitarian groups estimate that as many as 500,000 widow genocide survivors were left behind at the end of genocide with little help or financial resources to help care for their children and make a living in a country still plagued by endemic poverty. Most of these widows were farmers in rural communities depending on coffee across the tiny nation.
