UTZ Certified to run animal welfare workshop for coffee industry

Kopi-Luwak Coffee UTZ CertifiedUTZ Certified is holding a workshop focusing on the requirements relating to the use of caged animals in coffee production, in Denpasar, Bali on 30 October.
Use of the Asian palm civet in the production of Kopi Luwak, which is coffee harvested from the animals faeces, has gained Indonesia global recognition. The famed beans attracting prices of more than US$500 per pound.
The workshop follows the release of the new UTZ Certified Code of Conduct published earlier in the year, which includes regulations regarding the treatment of animals.
According to UTZ Certified, the objective of its code of conduct is to establish internationally accepted, practical and credible standards for mainstream sustainable coffee, cocoa and tea production.
All coffee producers and producer groups who wish to obtain certification are required to adhere to the code of conduct.
Participation in the workshops is open to all stakeholders and attendees are invited to contribute their expertise.
The workshop will take place at the UTZ Certified office in Denpasar.
