Coffee growing was introduced to the provinces of Yunnan and Hainan around 1887, most historical accounts agree. A French missionary is believed to have brought the first coffee seedlings into Binchuan county in Yunnan from plantations in Tonkin, which at the time was the northernmost province of Vietnam in French Indochina where coffee cultivation started between 1856 and 1857.
